Why should I replace my broken or cracked windshield?
The windshield is an important structural component of your vehicle. A broken or cracked windshield weakens a critical part of the safety design of modern vehicles. How is a windshield replacement performed?
There are numerous steps to performing a windshield replacement and these steps vary somewhat by year, make, and model of the vehicle. In general term the process is as follows:
1. All trim, moldings, and accessories are removed to gain access to the adhesive.
2. The adhesive is cut away to release the windshield from the body of the vehicle.
3. The mounting area is cleaned of excess adhesive to prepare for the application of fresh adhesive.
4. The mating surfaces of the new windshield are cleaned and coated with a primer to promote adhesion.
5. The adhesive is applied to the car body.
6. The new windshield is placed in the proper location and seated firmly against the adhesive.
7. Trim, moldings, and accessories are reinstalled.
8. The new glass is thoroughly cleaned.
Some vehicles have a reusable weatherstrip to secure the windshield to the body of the car. The process for replacement of such windshields is somewhat different.
How long does it take to replace my windshield?
Windshield replacement generally takes an hour or less, depending on the type of car and the condition of the glass and glass mating area.
When will I be able to drive my car?
In most cases you can drive your car when the technician has completed the installation. The technician will inform you of any special procedures or precautions for you to take.
Why was there blue tape left on my windshield?
The blue tape is used to maintain the position of the windshield while the adhesive fully cures. You may safely remove it after 24 – 48 hours.
